Job Description Summary

The Met-Lab Metallurgist is responsible for conducting a variety of metallurgical and mechanical tests in accordance with prescribed methods to determine the properties of metals, e.g. tensile, compressive, impact, creep, stress, rupture, ductility, grain structure, hardness or internal flaws, largely for control or test purposes. In addition, the Met-Lab Metallurgists are responsible for testing and development of part properties in accordance with prescribed tests, the performance of failure analysis and troubleshooting of processes. The Met-Lab Metallurgist is responsible for leading and supporting various initiatives, including enhancements to laboratories and production processes.

Job Description:

  • Conduct metallographic evaluations to identify microstructural defects, features and phases.
  • Perform tests on incoming materials, in-process parts, and samples from new powder vendors.
  • Set up and execute tests for fatigue, wear, corrosion, and other standard/special properties of metal samples
  • Test furnace performance, analyze chart data and recommend corrective actions relevant personnel.
  • Respond to MAR’s requiring standard or specialized testing of raw materials and finished products.
  • Collect and analyze data on the behavior of metals and alloys; prepare technical reports for internal and external stakeholders.
  • Manage assigned projects under the direction of the QM, including initiatives focused on continuous improvement and scrap reduction using core tools and problem-solving methodologies.
  • Proactively identify and propose process improvements and cost reduction projects.
  • Operate and maintain equipment and supplies related to Metallurgical Lab functions.
  • Lead in CQI-9 Internal Audits and compliance.
  • Record and analyze test data; provide evaluations and reports as needed.
  • Maintain organized records of test results, corrective actions, control reports and supporting documentation.
  • Ensure lab equipment and workspaces are clean and well maintained.
  • Serve as a technical resource for troubleshooting and problem resolution; coordinate appropriate support as needed.
  • Represent DAUCH at professional meetings and act as a technical contact for customer-related issues.
  • Supervise Metallurgical Technicians and Metallurgical/Quality Technicians
  • Champion Diversity & Inclusion in line with the Company guidelines
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Required Skills and Education

This position requires hands-on experience with metallurgical laboratory equipment, including the ability to operate, adjust, and modify tools to ensure optimal performance and accurate test results.

  • A minimum of 5 years’ experience in heat treating
  • Or a combination of heat treat experience and Technical education in materials science or a related field (Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree preferred)
  • Practical experience in metallurgical laboratory setting and ability to demonstrate understanding of QMS.
  • Solid knowledge of metallurgical and mechanical test methods
  • Familiarity with powder metallurgy processes and specialized testing techniques
  • Additional education or experience in ferrous metallurgy is highly preferred
